Method 1: Check manually in the store

It works, but know its limits:

Personalization skews results. The store knows what you've installed and searched before. Your own app often ranks higher for you than for a stranger — the number you see may be flattering you.
You can only check your own storefront. Checking your rank in Japan or Brazil means switching store regions, which is tedious on iOS and unreliable on Android.
It doesn't scale. Checking 20 keywords across 5 countries manually is 100 searches, every time.

Manual checks are fine for a quick sanity look at one or two keywords in your home market. For anything more, use a tool.

Method 2: Use a free rank checker

Store algorithms re-rank continuously — competitor releases, review velocity, seasonal demand, and algorithm updates all move positions week to week. What turns checking into growth is daily keyword tracking: your positions recorded every day, charted against the dates you shipped metadata changes, with alerts when something drops.

That history answers the only question that matters: did the change work? Move a keyword into your subtitle, watch the 14-day before/after, keep what worked, revert what didn't. Without history you're guessing; with it, ASO becomes an iteration loop.

What's a good ranking — and what should you do at each level?

Top 3: the keyword is actively driving installs. Protect it — keep it in your title or subtitle and watch competitors who target it.
4-10 (page one): good, with real upside. A stronger placement (title beats subtitle beats keyword field), a fresh update, or better review velocity can push you into the top 3, where the taps are.
11-30: the money zone. You're already indexed, so the store considers you relevant — these keywords respond fastest to metadata pushes. Give the exact phrase title or subtitle placement before chasing brand-new terms.
Below 30 / not found: the keyword currently returns nothing. Either commit real placement to it or spend the characters on something winnable — check the difficulty score first.

One more lever most developers ignore: when we analyzed the ASO scores of 123 real apps, 88% had localized nothing at all — while titles and descriptions were near-universally optimized. Every un-localized market is a set of keyword rankings you don't have yet, and localizing just your store metadata (not the app itself) is usually the cheapest ranking gain available.
