FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The ASO score combines metadata completeness, keyword coverage, localization breadth, screenshot quality, and content freshness. Each factor is weighted based on its impact on app store rankings.

Your score recalculates every time you make changes to your metadata or screenshots. You can also trigger a manual refresh at any time from the dashboard.

Yes. Every AppDrift account, including the free tier, can check their ASO score. Advanced historical tracking and competitive benchmarking are available on paid plans.

On Pro and Enterprise plans, you can benchmark your score against competitors in the same category. This helps identify specific gaps where they outperform you.

Scores above 80 are considered strong. Most top-ranking apps score between 85 and 95. The breakdown view shows exactly which areas to improve to reach the next tier.

Understanding Your ASO Score

Your ASO score is a single number from 0 to 100 that reflects how well your app store listing is optimized for discovery and conversion. It is not a vanity metric — it is a diagnostic tool that tells you exactly where your listing is strong, where it is weak, and what to fix first. Apps that consistently score above 80 tend to rank higher in search results and convert more page visitors into downloads.

What the Score Measures

The ASO score is a weighted composite of five categories, each reflecting a different aspect of your listing's health:

Title optimization (25%) evaluates whether your app name and title use high-value keywords effectively while staying within the 30-character limit. A strong title balances brand recognition with search relevance.

Subtitle and short description (15%) checks whether you are using this secondary field to add keyword coverage that complements your title. Many developers leave the subtitle underoptimized or repeat words already in the title, which wastes valuable indexing space.

Description quality (25%) assesses keyword density, readability, feature coverage, and the presence of a clear call to action. On Google Play, the description is directly indexed for search, making this category especially important for Android apps.

Keyword coverage (20%) measures how well your metadata covers your target keyword set. For iOS, this includes the dedicated keyword field in App Store Connect. For Android, it analyzes keyword distribution across your title, short description, and full description.

Localization breadth (15%) evaluates how many languages and locales you have optimized. Apps that localize metadata into 10 or more languages consistently see download increases of 30% or more.

What Each Grade Means

A+ (90-100): Your listing is fully optimized. All metadata fields are complete, keywords are well-distributed, and you are localized into multiple markets. Focus on maintaining freshness and testing new keyword opportunities.

A (80-89): Strong optimization with minor gaps. You may be missing localization in a few high-value markets or have room to improve keyword coverage in your description. Small tweaks can push you into the A+ range.

B (70-79): Good foundation but noticeable weaknesses. Common issues at this level include a subtitle that repeats title keywords, a description that is too short, or localization limited to fewer than five languages.

C (60-69): Significant optimization gaps. Your listing is likely missing keyword opportunities, has incomplete metadata fields, or lacks localization entirely. Addressing the top three issues flagged in your report can often jump your score by 15-20 points.

D (below 60): Major optimization needed. Listings at this level typically have generic titles, empty or minimal descriptions, no keyword strategy, and no localization. The good news is that improvements at this stage produce the largest gains.

How to Improve Each Category

For title optimization, start by researching the top keywords in your category and placing the highest-volume term in your app name. Use AI metadata generation to test different title variations that maximize keyword impact within the character limit.

For subtitle and short description, avoid repeating any words from your title. Instead, use this field to cover a second tier of keywords that describe your app's core function or target audience.

For description quality, write for both humans and algorithms. Structure your description with clear feature bullets, include your target keywords naturally in the first paragraph, and end with a compelling call to action.

For keyword coverage, use the full 100-character keyword field on iOS. Separate terms with commas and no spaces. Do not repeat words already in your title or subtitle. On Android, distribute keywords throughout your full description rather than front-loading them.

For localization, prioritize the top 10 markets by download volume for your category. AI-powered translation tools can localize your metadata into 40+ languages in under 30 minutes, including cultural adaptation and local keyword research.
