What a chart position tells you

Top charts rank apps by recent downloads — Top Grossing by revenue — within a country and category. A category chart is far easier to enter than the overall chart, which is why launch plans aim for a category first: a place in it adds visibility that search alone doesn’t provide.

Compare the same app across countries to see where it already has momentum, and where localization could help. The keyword rank checker shows search positions, the competitor keyword finder shows which searches a charting competitor appears in, and our explainer on App Store ranking factors covers what moves both.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my app's category ranking?

Pick your app in AppDrift's free category rank checker, choose up to 10 countries and run the check. It reads each country's top charts for your app's category and the overall charts — Top Free or Top Paid, and Top Grossing — and shows your position in each. No sign-up is needed.

Where does the chart data come from?

For the App Store, from Apple's public chart feed, which lists the top 100 iPhone apps in each chart and shows when Apple last updated it. For Google Play, from the public top charts, which list up to 200 apps. Charts are read live and reused for up to 30 minutes, so everyone checking the same chart sees the same snapshot.

Why isn't my app in the chart?

The public charts only go so deep: 100 places on the App Store and up to 200 on Google Play, sometimes fewer. An app below that depth, or one not listed in that country, shows as not in the chart. That is not a zero and not a sign of a problem with the listing. Chart position mostly follows recent downloads, and Top Grossing follows revenue.

What's the difference between category rank and keyword rank?

Category rank is your position in a top chart, driven mainly by recent downloads. Keyword rank is your position in search results for a phrase, which your title, subtitle, keywords and description influence directly. Use the free rank checker for keyword positions; it is usually the one you can move with metadata.

Why do games show more than one category?

On the App Store, games chart in their genre, such as Puzzle or Casual, and in the Games category as a whole. On Google Play, a game charts in its genre and among all games. The checker shows both, so you can see the more specific chart where a game is easier to spot.

Is the category rank checker free?

Yes, free with no sign-up, for any app on the App Store or Google Play in 60+ storefronts, with a fair-use limit per network. It shows a snapshot; AppDrift's free plan tracks five keyword rankings for your app every day.
