Public data on real daily app store rank movement is hard to find. Everyone has an opinion about whether your 15-spot drop "means something," and very little of it arrives with numbers attached. So we measured nearly six months of our own daily rank history. Everything below is descriptive statistics — what the numbers did, not why.

How much do App Store rankings actually move in a day?

The corpus is 13,220 daily rank observations across 452 tracked keyword series between 2026-02-16 and 2026-08-10: 9,015 observations / 321 series on iOS, 4,205 / 131 on Android. Restricting to consecutive-calendar-day pairs — the only pairs where "yesterday vs today" is a real comparison — gives 2,815 iOS and 1,073 Android day-pairs.

The story is the gap between the mean and the median. An average of 9.48 with a median of 1 is not a distribution where "ranks move about nine spots a day." It is a distribution where most days nothing much happens and a minority of days go haywire: 35.8% of iOS day-pairs showed no change at all, while 591 of them (21.0%) jumped or fell by 10 or more positions. The 90th percentile move was 28 positions. Roughly one tracked iOS day-pair in five moved double digits.

Why does Google Play look so much calmer — and why that number is misleading

Before the comparison: Google Play's free search surface returns only about 25 to 30 results, so a missing Android rank in our data means "outside the top 30," not "not ranked." We cannot observe churn we cannot measure. Android's apparent calm is at least partly an artifact of that shallow window — and we have no way to quantify how much of it — so iOS-versus-Android movement is not apples-to-apples below rank 30. With that stated: Android ranks in our panel moved an average of 0.58 positions per day (n = 1,073 day-pairs), were unchanged on 80.7% of day-pairs, and moved 10 or more positions just 16 times. The honest reading of that is narrower than "Play is calmer": inside the visible Play top 30, positions are sticky. What happens at rank 45 on Play is not calm — it is unobserved.

Does rank volatility depend on where you rank?

That is the strongest pattern in this dataset. Splitting the same iOS day-pairs by the rank band they started in produces a near-monotonic gradient: the deeper the starting band, the larger the observed daily moves. This is an association, not a mechanism — nothing here shows that depth causes volatility.

On iOS the top 10 is a different weather system from everything below it: 0.73 positions of average daily movement (n = 1,193) against 21.74 at rank 51+ (n = 856). The middle bands are nearly identical to each other — 9.17 at ranks 11–25 and 9.62 at 26–50 — so in this sample the line that separates stable from unstable is not "page one vs page two" but "top 10 vs not top 10."

The Android rows carry the same ~30-result clamp, and the deep bands are too thin to read: 24 day-pairs at ranks 26–50 and only 4 at 51+ — which is why that row is left blank rather than quoting an average off four observations. Android's 11–25 band (1.87 positions, 39.0% unchanged) is the only non-top-10 Android cell with enough pairs to say anything. Is a top-10 ranking actually safe?

Calm is not the same as permanent. Across the panel we observed 1,273 iOS days where a tracked keyword sat inside the top 10; those produced 56 exits from the top 10 and 65 entries into it. On Android there were 1,042 top-10 days, 48 exits, and 15 entries.

So a top-10 iOS position stayed put on 72.5% of observed days and still fell out of the top 10 on 56 occasions across the February–August window. That combination is the measurement trap: when a band barely moves, the one day it does move is easy to miss if you sample irregularly. The positions you most want to hold are also the quietest ones in the data, so a change there stands out against a much smaller background of routine movement than the same change at rank 60 would.

How much do rankings drift week over week?

Aggregating each series to a weekly average rank and comparing consecutive weeks produces the single most useful number in this study.

Sixteen and a half positions of movement per week, netting out to under two positions of actual direction. The swings are enormous and they almost entirely cancel. Below the top 10, week-to-week movement in this panel is overwhelmingly noise rather than trend — which is exactly why a single weekly check-in is such a poor instrument. Note the framing: we are describing the shape of the movement, not its cause.

My app dropped 15 positions overnight — should I panic?

If you were outside the top 10: almost certainly not. A 15-position single-day move sits inside the ordinary range for that depth — 21.0% of all iOS day-pairs moved 10 or more, the 90th-percentile move was 28 positions, and at rank 51+ the average day moved 21.74 positions. A drop of that size at that depth is indistinguishable from the ordinary day-to-day range in this data, so on its own it tells you nothing about whether something actually changed.

If you were inside the top 10, the same drop means something quite different. Top-10 ranks moved 0.73 positions on an average day and were unchanged 72.5% of the time, so a double-digit move out of that band is a genuine outlier — one of the 56 exits, not routine churn.

Either way the correct response is the same: read the trend line across several weeks, because a single day carries almost no information. How often does a tracked keyword rank at all?

A quieter finding that reframes the whole exercise: most daily checks in this panel came back with no rank at all. Note that this is measured per observation, not per keyword — a keyword that ranks intermittently contributes both ranked and unranked days.

On iOS, 37.2% of the 9,015 observations returned a rank at all; 14.8% of all observations were top 10 and 8.9% were top 3. The Android row looks better at the top — 25.4% of observations in the top 10 against 30.2% ranked at all — but that is the ~30-result window again, mechanically: on Play, if you are visible at all you are already close to the top, because there is nowhere else to be. It is a censoring effect, not evidence that Android apps rank higher. What this means for how you measure rankings

Five things this data supports doing today:

1. Sample daily, not weekly. A weekly check hands you one draw from a distribution whose average absolute swing is 16.45 positions and whose net drift is −1.92. You cannot separate those two with one sample a week.

2. Set your alarm threshold by rank band, not globally. Outside the top 10, a 10-position move should not trigger anything — it happened on 21.0% of iOS day-pairs. Inside the top 10, where the average move is 0.73 positions, even a modest slide deserves a look.

3. Judge every change on a multi-week trend, never on a day. A single day at rank 51+ carried 21.74 positions of average movement all on its own. Three consecutive weeks trending one direction is signal; Tuesday is not.

4. Watch your top-10 keywords more closely than your deep ones. That is where 56 exits happened against a near-flat background, so a movement there is far easier to distinguish from routine noise than one at depth.

5. Audit the keywords you never surface for. Only 37.2% of iOS observations returned a rank at all. That is an observation-level figure, not a keyword-level one — we did not measure how many individual keywords never ranked once — but it does mean the majority of daily checks in this panel came back empty, which is worth auditing if your slots are limited.

Methodology and limitations

The corpus is every daily rank observation stored by AppDrift's rank tracker between 2026-02-16 and 2026-08-10: 13,220 observations across 452 keyword series (iOS 9,015 / 321 series; Android 4,205 / 131 series). Day-over-day statistics use consecutive-calendar-day pairs only — if a series has a gap, that gap is not counted as a "move" — which yields 2,815 iOS and 1,073 Android pairs. Weekly figures compare each series' weekly average rank to the previous week's (666 iOS and 264 Android week-pairs). All aggregates are anonymized; no customer app is identified.

What this data cannot tell you. Four limits, stated plainly:

It is a self-selected sample. These are keywords AppDrift users chose to track, not a random sample of either store, and the apps behind them skew indie and small-team. We have not characterised the category mix, so we cannot say how representative it is. Store-wide volatility, and volatility for large publishers in particular, could look nothing like this.

Android movement below rank 30 is invisible. The free Play scraper returns roughly 25 to 30 results, so a missing Android rank means "outside the top 30" rather than "unranked." Every Android statistic here describes the visible window only, and the platform comparison is not valid below rank 30.

"Unchanged" means consecutive calendar days. A series that skips a day contributes no pair for that gap, so the unchanged percentages describe day-to-day stability, not week-long stability.

We make no causal claims. This study measures how much ranks moved. It does not identify what moved them — not algorithm updates, not competitors, not reviews, not your own metadata edits. Anyone telling you a rank movement had a specific cause is doing something this dataset cannot do.
